Chapter Thirteen
I sat on that front porch long after I’d plucked my cigarette from the ground and inhaled every last puff of it that I could take in. My hands continued to shake, so much that I tucked them between my knees as I stared out at the darkened landscape, into the blackness that surrounded me.
The Porsche stuck out horridly against the rugged backdrop of the cottage grounds.
It made me wonder if I didn’t stick out just as badly.
I was a city girl. Always had been, always would be. I didn’t know a thing about existing in a place that was this damn quiet and remote. Where I came from, the night harbored harsh lights and loud voices and dangers that lurked in the shadows of the alleyways. Here, the nighttime held the rhythmic song of crickets and the constant flight of winged insects that buzzed past my ears.
It unnerved me.
But not as much as the thought of going back inside that cabin.
I didn’t know what I’d say to Noah once I opened that door, and I wasn’t even sure what kind of response he’d give me anyway.
He’d kissed me, and I’d let him—then, I’d cursed him for it.
My mind was reeling, replaying the heat and need and urgency of his mouth as it explored mine. The sensation was on a vivid loop within me, and my skin tingled with the memory.
My body, it seemed, had recovered from the shock of it long before my mind had, leading the way for need and a bolt of desire to course through me instead. Which surprised me just as much.
“Damn it,” I whispered. I clapped my hands onto my knees and pulled myself up from the stairs where I’d taken refuge.
My breath was trapped within my lungs as I turned the tarnished doorknob and opened the door painstakingly slowly, peering in as I did so. Unfortunately, no amount of sneakiness was going to allow me to creep back into that cabin unannounced, and the door creaked loudly as it swung open.
Noah was on the couch, his feet on the coffee table in front of him. He glanced up from his phone, his expression blank.
“I…I’m sorry.” I shrugged my shoulders, then immediately wished I hadn’t, hoping it didn’t dull the sincerity of my apology.
He stayed silent, and I couldn’t read him.
Yeah, it was definitely more unnerving in the cabin than out.
“I didn’t mean it the way I said it,” I continued. My voice was small, and I fidgeted a bit, wringing my hands as I tried to explain. “I shouldn’t have said that. I shouldn’t...” I sighed, letting my shoulders sag. “I should’ve asked what’s wrong with me, not you.”
Noah lowered his feet to the floor, pushing his cellphone onto the table. “Sasha, there’s nothing wrong with you. A lot has happened. You’re just scared.”
“Of you.” The admission fell from my lips before I could rein it back in, but I didn’t try to take it back. I needed to be honest. With Noah, and with myself.
